Steve S.
Private tutor in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Education
After high school I obtained my AA at Marymount Junior College in Palos Verdes. From there I went to Cal State San Francisco and studied Family and Child Studies. This would have given me a career in social work. I did not graduate and ended up working for ten years as a writer and producer in the entertainment industry. Recently, I am finishing my BA in Liberal Studies at CSUDH and will follow with a credential in k-6 multi-subject teaching. I am a student of school as much as I am a student of life.
Experience
I teach beginning drawing and painting for young kids, as well as beginning ceramics for kids/teens at a private art studio, with small class sizes. The kids are often high achievers. I tailor my lessons to each specific student. I've spent 50+ hours volunteering in a 4th grade class, sometimes working with groups, other times one on one, doing reading, math, PE, and science. I am in the teaching program at CSUDH and exposed to subject matter specifically geared towards elementary school kids including: physical science, algebra, geometry, California history, teaching English as a second language, art including drawing, painting, and ceramics, children's literature, poetry, and Earth Science. I am also exposed to Common Core methodology and standards. I was a writer and producer for 10 years, giving me on the job, almost unobtainable, real world experience in writing. In terms of my educational writing, I am without a doubt, an A level writer. I am also a father to a very bright 8 year old son. Ultimately, I fully support the right for every parent to have the opportunity to supplement their child's public education with private tutoring. I'm proud to be a part of that. It is exciting to know that I can help a child be a better student and help them master any given skill or subject.

Hobbies
I am dedicated to the idea of wanting kids to be better students. I am observant and can identify kids with different learning styles. I have a calm, kind, relaxed demeanor. I have no problem challenging a student who needs to be challenged. On my free time, I draw and paint as a student, which means lots of practicing. I recently took up playing the bass guitar. I continue to teach art and I am volunteering again in a 5th grade class. My son won a kindness award last school year and I'd like to think he gets his kindness from me :)
